What is a QTS Check?
Our QTS checking service enables employers and potential employers to view the DfE (Department for Education) record of any teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Who needs a QTS check?
Anyone who wants to teach in a state-maintained school in England or Wales needs to gain QTS, (although academies can employ teachers without QTS if they believe they are suitably qualified. Individual academies will decide whether an individual without QTS is suitably qualified to be employed as a teacher.)
Although QTS is not mandatory in the independent sector, it is highly recommended and many choose to acquire it, because it gives portability across all sectors for teachers, and gives a consistent assessment of candidates’ qualifications.
What do QTS Checks show?
An employer or potential employer can view the record of any teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) (with the exception of teachers who have achieved QTS through holding Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) or any teacher with an active restriction (including any teacher with QTLS to whom this applies), and any teacher who has been the subject of a decision by the Secretary of State not to impose a prohibition order following a determination by a professional conduct panel of unacceptable professional conduct, conduct that may bring the teaching profession into disrepute or conviction of a relevant offence).
It also provides access to separate lists of:
- teachers who have been prohibited from teaching.
- teachers who may be the subject of a suspension or conditional order imposed by the GTCE (prior to its abolition) that is still current.
- teachers who have failed to successfully complete their induction or probation period.
Our QTS Checks result certificate will give the details as stated above.
